Lipirichi Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Early-Middle Jurassic (Pliensbachian-Bathonian)

Province:
Zimbabwe-Mozambique

Type Locality and Naming

Metangula Basin (Mozambique). A formal lithostratigraphic unit representing the uppermost preserved Karoo-aged sedimentary sequence within the Metangula Basin in northern Mozambique. Upper formation in Stormberg Gr in Metangula Basin (Mozambique)

Synonym:

Lithology and Thickness

Based on the regional stratigraphic column, the Lipirichi Formation consists of an intercalated sequence of fine-to-medium clastic sediments, primarily mudstones alternating with sandstones and siltstones.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the Tende Fm within the Metangula Basin.

Upper contact

Forms the top of the preserved Karoo succession in the Metangula Basin. Younger Late Triassic strata are absent and may never have been deposited.

Regional extent

Geographically restricted to the Metangula Basin (a graben structure) in Mozambique. Correlates with the Manda Beds Fm (such as the Lifua Member) of the Ruhuhu Basin in Tanzania, representing the upper Beaufort Gr / lower Stormberg Gr transition equivalents in the eastern African rift basins.
